1821: Adams-OniĆ Treaty is signed; Florida becomes a U.S. territory
1822: Territorial assembly enacts black codes that define and regulate slavery
1827: Free blacks are forbidden entry into the Florida territory
1832: Miscegenation is outlawed in the Florida territory
1842: Free blacks are required to have guardians and to register with authorities
1845, March 3: Florida enters the Union as a slave state
1861, January 10: Florida secedes from the Union and joins the Confederacy
