1770: Black codes establish a $25 fine for teaching slaves to read
1773: Georgia's slave population is estimated at 15,000
1788, January 2: Georgia enters the Union
1829: Fine for teaching slaves to read is increased to $500
1850: Georgia House of Representatives votes to repeal the 1829 law regarding the teaching of slaves, but the measure fails in the state Senate
1852: Georgia legislature increases the penalty for racial mixing
1858:409 slaves from Africa arrive in Georgia
1861, January 19: Georgia secedes from the Union and joins the Confederacy
1862: Union forces seize control of coastal Georgia
1863: Blacks are permitted to enlist in the Union army
