More than 100 epicureans, food writers and restaurateurs from the Southern Foodways Alliance will immerse themselves in Birmingham's food and racial heritage this weekend.

The three-day "Field Trip to Birmingham," beginning Friday, will examine racial progress in Birmingham and rural Alabama through stories, music, photography - and, of course, food.

"It's a look at race relations and how food bridges racial groups," said John T. Edge, executive director of the Southern Foodways Alliance, which was founded in Birmingham in 1999 but is based at the University of Mississippi.
