Free black family migration: VA to PA, NY, OH, KY
In Response To: Re: [OH] Cincinnati "Colored Citizens" in 1842 CD ()
African-American Tosspot families from Winchester, VA to Delaware County, PA; Buffalo, NY; Cincinnati, OH; Louisville, KY Associated surnames: Ball, Guess, Lucas, Strange, Tolliver, Triplett Art, thanks again for posting the link to your list of African-American residents of Cincinnati, 1842. I recognized surnames associated with several Virginia families, including Tosspot. The Robinson, Strange, and Tosspot families all had a connection to Edward McGuire of Winchester, VA. Although “tosspot” is a slang word for a drunkard, I’m not sure of the name’s true origin. It could have been a misspelling of another name. Like the African-American Strange families in PA (& perhaps also those in OH), they also descend from FPOC in Winchester, VA. Variant spellings include Taspot, Tasspot, Tespot, Tospot, Tospott. Apparently related individuals migrated from Virginia to Buffalo, NY, Cincinnati, OH, Delaware County, PA, and Louisville, KY. 1803-1820 Winchester, Frederick, VA (Free Negroes & Mulattos)
