Re: [NC] Ray Battle, 1944 Homestead Grays of DC
In Response To: Re: [DC] Ray Battle, 1944 Homestead Grays of DC
() I looked up Ray Battle (aka Battles) in THE BIOGRAPHICAL ENCLYCLOPEDIA OF THE NEGRO BASEBALL LEAGUES, James A. Riley. According to this source, "He was discovered by the Grays while playing in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, a hometown he shared with the Grays' superstar Buck Leonard." So it seems unlikely that Ray Battle/Battles was related to Rufus and Rupert Battle/Battles, uncles of Daltie Cooper, who played on the Homestead Grays team in 1930. Daltie Cooper and Rufus Battles were listed at the same address in Harrisburg, PA in 1930. Their families were neighbors in or near Arkadelphia, AR in 1920.
