MR. JAMES CLARENCE BENHAM MR. BILLY BENHAM
Mr. James Clarence Benham, age 80, and Mr. Billy Benham, age 63, both of 12 Red Comb Dr, Cartersville died Saturday, August 4, 2007 and Friday, August 3, 2007 respectively.
Funeral service for both will be 1:00 PM Wednesday, August 8, 2007 at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Oakhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM Tuesday, August 7, 2007 at Eppinger's Funeral Home.
Clarence was born March 29, 1927 to the late Bradford and Flora Ethel Benham. He was an honor graduate of the Cartersville School System, a veteran of WWII, an entrepreneur, and the first African American Councilman and Mayor Pro Tem in Cartersville, Ga.
Clarence was active in many organizations: Deacon of the Greater Mt. Olive Baptist Church of Cartersville, Grand Potentate of the Shriners and Member of the Mt. Zion Lodge #6. He also served the Coosa Valley Planning and Development Commission, Georgia Association of Black Elected Officials and the Georgia Municipal Association.
Billy Benham was born May 31, 1944 to Clarence and Jesse Knox Benham. He was educated in the Cartersville School System and graduated from Tuskegee Institute. He fulfilled his lifelong dream of becoming a professional soldier as a member of the Airborne Ranger Special Forces Group. He commanded several units during his career and served as an instructor at the Military Advisor School at Fort Benning, Ga.
After retiring from the service Billy was active in the Vietnam Veterans Association, The American Legion, The Boy Scouts and The Saint John Ski Bees. Billy had a true humanistic concern for those less fortunate than he, and he willingly shared what he had with them.
Clarence and Billy are survived by sons/siblings:
grandchildren/children, Bryan Benham, Barry Benham (Debra), Johari Pollard (J.T.) and Kwarley Buckle, and a host of other relatives and friends.
