[TN] ARMSTEADS, MASONS
My paternal great-grandfather, John Bascom Ponds, married Ida Armstead from Tennessee on December 24, 1891 in Conway County, Arkansas. She died in childbirth with my grandfather in 1897 and we can find nothing at all about her. She was born in Tennessee about 1873. I found an Armstead family in Giles County in 1880 who had a 7 year old daughter named Ida. They were Hillard and Caroline Armstead with children Ada, Ida, Douglas, and Scott. Hillard was born in Mississippi in 1850. Caroline was born in Tennessee in 1850. I can find nothing about anyone in this family after that time. My Ancestry subscription expired and Heritage Quest has sparse information.
I don’t know how or where he met my great-grandmother. He was born someplace in South Carolina and in 1880 lived in Gilbert Hollow Township in Lexington County. The family was in Conway County at least by 1888 when his brother George married Ida Swaggert or Swygert from South Carolina. I have not been able to locate the family before 1880 or between 1880 and 1888. I thought perhaps they stopped off in Tennessee during the mass Exodus from South Carolina but although I found Ponds in Tennessee, none were from South Carolina and none of his family members.
We had to omit the Armsteads from the recently completed family history book but my curiosity just won’t die. I want to know who I am – I want to know who they are. I searched Conway County for any sign of the family and have zero.
My great-grandfather married a second time – again to a Tennessee woman – Ella Mason, also coincidentally -from Giles County.
If anyone has any Armstead information to share with me, please do so.
