Re: [LA] Unable to trace family origins

Hi Jacqueline M,

Congratulations for tracing your family back to the 1870 census but that is usually the end of the line for most former slave ancestors. Grant Parish was created in 1869 from Winn and Rapides Parish. There was a courthouse fire in Rapides Parish in 1864 so there are virtually no records from the slavery era beyond the Slave censuses and some court records that were litigated outside the Rapides Parish. If your family was from the Winn Parish side of Grant Parish then there might be records in the Winnsboro courthouse. Your ancestors are too young to be found in Dr. Gwen Midlo Hall slave database (1719 - 1820) but you may want to check the Freedmans Bank Records for them.
