You are the second person to call my dad a hero on this site.
I've scanned his funeral program and I will upload to the index. His history and family history is documented well in this program. It is interesting that as a kid I knew of my dad's accomplishments, but never appreciated them like I do now. It was just what he did. I do have fond memories of working with my dad at many Senior Citizen group meetings passing out cookies and punch after their meetings , registering voters door to door and at the grocery store, attending NAACP meetings, and stuffing hundreds of envelopes. I remember my dad explaining to an older man that he did not have to pay a poll tax and the man was very surprised and then agreed to register to vote.
I think the best memory is working with him in the family garden we always had one growing up..probably why I love fresh vegetables. I did not know until his death that he had majored in Agriculture at Tuskegee Institute, (still trying to find the year) so he really did know what he was talking about when he gardened! He would shake off the dirt and eat raw vegetables and comment on what he needed to do to the soil.
I guess family history research often times makes the patterns in our lives make sense, because at the time it is happening we are just going about the business of living. Our later reflections help to organize, document and provide witness for those to come.
On my to do list is to get copies of all the articles of my family documented in the San Antonio Register and local newspapers.
My older sister is always surprised about what I don't know, but I guess I was a middle child in my own little world, now I want to know everything. :-)
