Ole' Time Juneteenth Memories & Ideas Wanted

Our family reunion is scheduled for June 18 - 20, 2010 in Marshall, Texas. We want to incorporate Juneteenth as our main theme and are desperate for ideas and memories that will help us recapture the early Texas celebrations of it.

Born and raised in San Francisco what I know about Juneteenth I've learned on the Internet and a couple of huge block parties when I was a teenager but I feel something is still missing. My mom born and raised in Marshall says when she was a child she didn't even really know what the 4th of July was in Texas (LOL). Their big holiday was Juneteenth and Big Day. She didn't really become familiar with 4th of July until she came to California in her late teens.

The Internet says foods with red coloring are traditional to symbolize the blood of slaves. I've even read where former slaves celebrating Juneteenth would come dressed in former slave garb and at some point take those off to reveal more spiffy duds underneath with the old clothing being thrown into a river as a group making a symbolic gesture of getting rid of the old and looking towards the future.

I'm desperate to hear your ideas and/or memories of any related traditions that will help the decorating committee really bring this holiday to life for everyone 1865 style!

Thank you
