Re: 35th Family Reunion 2010, We need ideas!

Hi, April!

This is an idea that I hope to be able to introduce soon to my own family (smile).

The women in my family have a long tradition of quilt making so I thought it would be wonderful for us to put one together as a family. Not a quilt for someone to sleep under perse but a quilt that can be lovingly kept for generations and bought out as a family heirloom at each Family Reunion thereafter.

This idea would take advance organization, notice, etc. but you have plenty of time!

I want to put together a letter that would go out to all family members. The letter would have 3 or 4 very short paragraphs about a particular family member with a history of making quilts. For instance, my Great Grandmother made them all the time and when she was young made one for each of her sibblings each Christmas. You'd know best who has the history of quilt making or sewing as a hobby, contact them and have a list of questions for them. How they started, why? The best quilt they ever made? What occasions they were made for if special, for instance, a wedding quilt, etc.

Next tell them that you want to put a beautiful tapestry together to be passed down for generations to come.

Ask each family group to bring their own quilt pieces in June, already finished. For instance if it's a family of four people then they should each come in June with a square all their very own for the quilt. The quilt piece should be somehow representative of them. Whatever their hobby is or whatever lights a fire for them in their hearts and monogram or stitch their first and last names somewhere on the square and the current year. Each piece can NOT be larger than 8 1/2 x 11. They should also leave two inches of clear fabric around their design. This will give your ultimate seamstress space to work her magic as she connects it.

YES, I know this is going to be more like a tarp than a quilt but can you imagine how beautiful it would be if everyone bought a quilt square to each Family Reunion?

You'd more or less end up with your own Family Quilt that tells a story about each of you. At some point it will become enormous but God Bless the Blessed Soul that becomes the "Keeper of The Family Tapestry" in another 50 years!

We have a family banner and its kept by the Family Historian who brings it to each Family Reunion. Perhaps they could be the Keeper of the final product and therefore responsible for it until the next Reunion.

Just think if we had such a quilt today that had started in 1880! What a DIAMOND that would be.

If there's not a seamstress in the family willing to take on the honor of assembling your quilt I'm sure you could find someone else to do it for a fee. That fee would be returned a thousand fold.

Just an idea I want to pitch to my own family. Perhaps your family would treasure one as well.

Our next Reunion is June 19, 2010 and our theme will be Juneteenth & Big Day all rolled into one! The best of luck and may the Ancestors shine on your efforts until the day.
