Even here in Atlanta, family members were happy to get the $89 rate in 2004. We had a $80 rate in Pensacola this year, but the area is less costly than Atlanta, and the hotel we used did not have banquet facilities, so my cousin was able to rent the banquet hall on the base, which was just a few blocks away. And let's not even talk about what the room rates were in Destin, FL...where we tried at first.
Since your family is coming to California, you may have to "program" them now that things may be a little bit more expensive. In my family, I've found that some people don't mind spending a little extra for a nice hotel, as long as the prices are not astronomical. Some have even told me that they would rather pay a little bit more rather than paying an VERY economical rate and ending up in a mediocre hotel. People hate bad hotels.
For California, to me, $100 per night seems reasonable.
This is just my opinion. Maybe someone out there will come forth and lead you in the right direction to getting a very nice hotel, with adequate banquet facilities, with the $80/night room rate.
