Political parties meet to end presidential election controversy; End of Reconstruction results
Representatives of Republican presidential candidate Rutherford B. Hayes (1822–1893) meet with southern Democrats in Washington DC to settle the controversial presidential election of 1876. After months of arguing, the parties reach a complicated agreement. Democrats supported Hayes's win over Democratic challenger Samuel Tilden (1814–1886) in exchange for several promises by Republicans, including the removal of the last Reconstruction–enforcing federal troops from in the South.
This results in an end to Reconstruction.
