Re: Update--SC Newspapers

8) I finally remembered to call my local Main Library Special Collections section, they referred me to a site small town newspapers,com--but I knew that was not the list I needed. I then remembered to call the SC ARCHIVES. I was given information to google SC Press Association. BINGO. this site had THE LIST. There are names of weekly and daily newspapers. You want to look at the weekly newspapers A-Y. Abbeville was the first name. All of the names don't have a email address listed and I would rather talk to a human, when ever possible first. I called and told her my story about black history month is coming, the ancestors have planted this seed in my mind to find a newspaper and tell the story. Family tend to move within a state, but how would you know where. Little towns like to read about stuff connected to them. The Abbeville Editor advised me to...
1.send a EMAIL to each paper listed. In subject line write Letter to the Editor
2. Explain what you want to have placed in their paper and get information as to what section it will be in
3. Make sure if there is a payment needed, send a check or Money order. Keep a record of payments and a copy of your email sent to each newspaper.
4. In the body of the email write your story. I suggest to write it like you are are talking to a friend face to face.
5. If you choose, you might want to pick a newspaper you would like and subscribe to it. It will be a good idea for future stories. And they will know you will notify this one if it isnt published.

There are names of newspapers listed A-Y.(Abbeville to York) Abbeville Svc's towns called Calhoun Falls, Due West, Iva,and Donalds. I was told a lot of these newspapers are owned by families. There are about 90 names of newspapers listed. The Abbeville Editor said it is NOT A GOOD IDEA to group together all the papers with email addresses in one email. Contact each one individually. If you think about it, 5 towns for each newspaper is a lot of communication getting out there. Now I have to get to writing. I want to get this to them BEFORE BLACK HISTORY MONTH. And a suggestion here. I always include as the website to use to post information about finding ancestors. The words in my stories about x-slaves and area where ancestors lived will let the reader know this is a ethnic website. I don't put my picture out there, but include a picture of a deceased ancestor. Safer that way. I have a fantastic one of my grandmother. I am going to recycle each one to different stories. Got to draw that attention. There are so many people that do not know about black genealogy websites to use. :D
