Chronicling America & the Louisville Leader

In teaching others how to use the Chronicling America website to find the location of African American newspapers, I lead them to the Ethnic Press dropdown menu where they can select the African American option and thus get a compiled listing. The list can be narrowed by selecting a specified date range, state, and other criteria.

The purpose of this post is to make you aware that if you make this type of search for the state of Kentucky for the decades between 1910 to 1950, the site will not return an entry for the Louisville Leader, an African American paper that has extant copies from 1917-1950. For whatever reason, it is not designed as a black paper in their system. In January I tried to notified the Library of Congress about the glitch, but they said they had essentially no involvement with the interworkings of the Chronicling America site. I have not been able as of yet to contact those who maintain the site and the LOC person apparently has not done so either.
