I think that every African American, and even those who are not, should have at least ten real good African American movies or African American related movies. Certainly back in the 1970s it was called blaxexploitation films, however even some of those were pretty good and exciting.
A lot of good movies came out in the 1980s such as Krush Groove in 1985, TheColor Purple also in 1985, Leon on Me in 1989, and Glory also in 1989.
As we came in the 1990s, we had Boyz N the Hood and Malcolm X along with Eve's Bayou.
Some movies that came out back in the 1940s and 1950s were pretty good, and a lot of them did not have that stereotypical stuff such as
Island in the Sun with Dorothy Dandridge and Harry Belafonte; also Carmen Jones. Raisin in the Sun came out in 1961, Sergeant Rutledge in 1960, and The Learning Tree in 1969.
So I believe that we all should take a time out and really research into our Black films, Black oriented films, and make a library of those films. It is worth it.
