CIVIL WAR MEDALS - West Virginia State Archives

This is a great website! Lots of interesting information and well done. But there is a correction that can be made. I am a state Historian here in the West Virginia State Archives and I could not help but notice that the 45th US Inf. Col. Troops was listed as being from Pennsylvania. They were organized there but they were officially assigned to the new state of West Virginia. We even have REAL CIVIL WAR MEDALS for these men...not later veterans awards or reproductions but REAL 1866 Civil War medals issued by the state of West Virginia for ALL THEIR UNION CIVIL WAR SOLDIERS. Many of these medals never found their rightful owners so we have several thousand left in our collection.
We are offering these medals to any ancestors of these soldiers. All they have to do is to prove their relationship to the vet using copies of official documents. The ones for the African-American soldiers are especially difficult to find ancestors to collect them. The list of all these medals is on our website at www.wvculture.org. Look for the Archives section and search for the medals list. All the men in the 45th US are African-Americans!
If you could announce this on your site somehow you might help African-American genealogists to connect to these valuable medals. Anyone curious about this can contact me at: email@example.com
Thanks, Greg Carroll

Well, after further research, I must admit that I was partially wrong about this regiment. The 45th US Colored Troops was assigned to Pennsylvania EXCEPT two of it's companies that were given to West Virginia. I am not sure which companies these were! But I do know that we here in the West Virginia State Archives do have the medals I mentioned for these soldiers in these two companies.
