Re: WWII Black Engineers
In Response To: WWII Black Engineers ()
You are so right. There is a web site to give some information on these army units during the war and a site for Reference books on African Americans in Alaska according to the site person. African Americans have been in Alaska since it was purchased from Russia. This sites gives informaton on African Americans who came up north to join in the Gold Rush in the late 1890's. This site states that there were 3600 Black Soliders of the 93rd, 95th and 97th Engineering Regiments who worked on the Alaskan Highway. Black Engineering Regiments that were stationed in Alaska during World War II were the 388the Engineer Battalion (Colored) who worked on the CANOL pipeline in Canada. The 93rd Infantry Engineers, 383rd, 72nd, 483rd Port Battalion and the 364th Infantry were assigned to the Aleutian Islands Campaign. There is also a list of Black Gold Miners and where they are from and were they were panning for gold too. The reason I know this is I live in Alaska.
