Re: Charles Bush & Major Pelham
![]() In Response To: Charles Bush & Major Pelham ()
I know this is about the Union Memorial and Charles Bush's name being submitted to be included, but I may be of some help. The Calhoun County Confederate Memorial in Ohatchee Alabama has Charles Bush's name carved on it. Charles Bush was the manservant to Capt. Thomas Bush and accompanied him to battle at the beginning of the war- it was a slaughterhouse. Charles Bush survived and walked back to Alabama from Va, joined a local unit and was elected corporal, the rank he ended the war with. Bush is buried just down the road from here and his grand, greatgrand and gggrand children live here. Charles Bush was a black Confederate non commissioned officer in charge of white troops, and from what I've heard, was a natural leader and well respected.
