Re: Seminole-Negro Scouts Assoc. Info
In Response To: Re: Seminole-Negro Scouts Assoc. Info ()
Thank you for the reply, but I know where William Shields is buried and would like to pass it along to the Ass'n, so they have a record of it.
William Shields is buried in the John Howard Cemetery on the grounds of St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington, DC. I came across his marker on Christmas Eve and have not been able to do any research yet on why he would have ended up at the hospital. I have come across a reference that he was discharged in 1908 with a disability. St. Elizabeth's was at that time and still is a hospital for mental illness.
In the next couple of days I will have a link off of my web site, www.allfortheunion.com, with a history of St. E's, the Civil War and John Howard Soldier cemeteries on the grounds of the hospital. We will also have information on the soldiers that are buried there as the research is completed.
William Shields will be there and we will update his information as we obtain it. I would be more than happy to have any information about Cpl. Sheilds passed along that anyone may have.
If you are interested in the grave marker it can be viewed at www.findagrave.com. Search by cemetery - St. Elizabeths - District of Columbia. View the interned and I have listed him with a few other that I have posted.
I hope that this information will make it to the Ass'n and also be useful in helping to answer questions about the scouts or assist in family history.
