At least two USCT Civil War veterans with STRANGE surname are listed on rosters of Pennsylvania Volunteers:
MATT STRANGE, 41st Regiment, Co. D (Bates vol. 5, p. 1078), and WILLIAM STRANGE, 6th Regiment, Co. E (Bates vol. 5, p. 954).
The 1870 census includes several men named William Strange in Virginia and Ohio who are probably related to my ancestor Hannah A. Strange Berry Wise. The African-American Strange family in Warren County, OH apparently descends from Reuben Strange who was emancipated by Edward McGuire in 1817 in Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia.
Both of Hannah's husbands could be Civil War veterans. Her first husband was WILLIAM BERRY. Several African-Americans named William Berry served in the Union army. Hannah's second husband URIAH WISE also served as a Civil War Pennsylvania Volunteer in 210th Regiment, Co. K.
