Thanks so much for posting Paul's message. I read all the links, but the one which always means the most to me is the url for Paul's history project on the USCT of Ohio.

One of its links took me to the Park Service's Sailor's Database.
When I clicked on the map of South America, I was amazed to read that Chile had the largest number native born black recruits in all of South America. Twenty-five.

Even more interesting was that several of the sailors were inducted at Lima Peru's port Callao in 1864. This was the same year that it went to war with Spain.

Do you know of Union Naval recruiters who would have been in Peru in 1864?

It's a fascinating bit of history to pursue.
