Black man in white CIVIL WAR regiment?

Has anyone researched African Americans in white Civil War regiments? Apparently Uriah A. Wise of Chambersburg, PA (a biracial former slave from VA) enlisted as a PA Volunteer, rather than USCT. His military service, as a private (1864-65), is the earliest record I find for him. After that, he is counted in the federal census from 1870-1900, and probably died in 1909-10. I am not entirely sure this Civil War veteran is my ancestor Uriah Wise, but my research suggests that he is "black" in some records and "white" in others. He might have used a recruitment bounty payment to buy property in Chambersburg. I'm looking for land records also. I have requested his pension file, but it seems to be lost between National Archives and Veterans Administration. All suggestions welcome.
