Finding genealogy thru military records.
I just discovered this forum, when I saw a message about USCT on the slave forum. This has opened my eyes, because I didn't know you can get genealogy information from military/pension records. I had only been looking at FPOC and slave forums, and checking census records.
I knew that my gg-grandfather J.B.Chestang was in the 98th reg't USCI in the Civil War, and he started getting a pension. I have send for his military records. With more research I have now found that his father Auguste Chastong (Chastang) was in the war of 1812, 14 reg't (McBoy's) Mississippi Militia.
Thanks you for this and all these great forums. My ggg-granfather Auguste is such a mystery member of Dr. John Chastang's family, but I hope his military records can clear up my many questions.
Does anyone have any information on the 14 reginment (McBoy's) Mississippi Militia? In fact I didn't know that blacks (FPOC) fought in the WAR of 1812, but I do know that my ggg-grandfather and at 4 of his brothers were there.
