I have heard this same song sung, by Frank Sinatra, Harry Connick Sr., Rosemarie Clooney, Doris day and even Barbara Streisand. I can not pin point its origin. I believe it to be a song adopted by military unit becomes of its endearing theme. Soldiers relate to the story within the song.
