If your question about the star, is from a name being on the USCT Memorial Plaques. Then the star only seperate the names.
Review older Military Forum input, "USCT Memorial Plaques", History Buff, 2-15-13

Regarding "Does the symbol behind the name indicate the type of unit the U.S.C.T. (United States Colored Troops) served with? Or, is there some other meaning?"
The explanation provided to me during the African American Civil War Museum Docent Training is as follows:
"What do the symbols (stars, circles and diamonds) on the plaques mean?"
The stars separate the soldiers’ individual names. The circle behind the name represents more than one variation of soldier’s name. The diamond distinguishes the soldier served in more than one regiment.
