I think the number that served in the Confederacy is not as important atleast to me but the acknowledgement that some did unknowlingly and many unwillingly. Surely no clear thinking man would leave his current existence as a free person to enter a war where he could be blown to bits at any minute or killed by either side depending on the mood of the person with the gun/bayonet.
Thank you for pointing out that many FPOC provided paid support to the Confederacy. I hadn't considered that. I am sure they actually could not have said "No" and still remained in their respective communities.
