Joseph WAS part of the group that headed to Harrisburg to defend Pennsylvania when General Lee's forces made entry and he was aboard both the Princeton and the Ticonderoga. It appears that he was assigned to the Ticonderoga on the 16th of January 1864, was on shore the following day and contracted spotted fever and died five day's later from the illness.
