Hi Gwen: The internet is full of descriptions of WWI... its years etc. Just briefly, WWI was from 1914 to 1918. Therefore his being in the 1920 census would shed no light on whether he served or not. The US entered the war in 1917 and most troops by the year 1919 would have returned home if they served overseas. You should click on the front page of the Military Forum. Bennie McRae's Lest We Forget (click on it) will direct you to African Americans serving in the Military. Your grandfather like mine was drafted, which doesn't mean that he served. Ancestry has a list of all the draft records from WWI. Do you have it? Let me know. Either way, he was not killed in the war. Looking for a death index may be of help to you. K Wyer Lane
