In Response To: Buffalo Soldier and Scientist, Dies at 83
() I hate to be picky, but he wasn't actually a "Buffalo Soldier". That title belongs only to men who served in the regular Army with the 9th or 10th Cavalry or the 24th or 25th Infantry. All others are just soldiers. No less worthy of praise, but not entitled to be called 'Buffalo' Soldier. None of the regular Army regiments were ever part of the 92nd Division, and none of the regiments of the 92nd existed before WW1 (meaning they never fought Indians, Spanish or Mexicans like the real Buffalo Soldiers did). It's too common today to hang the title of Buffalo Soldier on any black WW2 vet just because he was in the Army. The news media thinks this is some kind of generic name that applies to all black Army veterans of WW2 and before. It's a title of honor not a term of convenience. Just because the media can't get their facts straight doesn't mean we have to get it wrong too. We're supposed to know better.
