Sheirl Dyan Alston McCormick retires

Veteran's Day 2005: African-American military pioneer retires from Army
JOAN PLOTNICK
November 09, 2005
When Sheirl Dyan Alston McCormick of Clayton joined the U.S. Army, she never thought – almost 35 years later – she’d retire from the Army National Guard as the first female African-American soldier in North Carolina with 30 years of military service.
“I was initially concerned because I looked around and didn’t see me; everyone was white and there were no females,” she said. “I actually thought about quitting, but a colonel wouldn’t let me go.”

As Veteran’s Day approaches, she looks back fondly at her long career in the military. Her journey began with the simple desire to leave her hometown of Louisburg, a small agricultural community where her father was a farmer. One of 11 children, McCormick said there was little opportunity in Louisburg except on the farm, and that did not interest her.
