You just had to know the following was coming right at you re blacks you joined the Regulars after the Civil War.
Not just "men"--can't overlook the famous Cathy Williams in the 38th Infantry.
Maybe with diligent research someone will find that this black woman had previously served under arms in a Confederate unit. But of course, those records no longer exist.
But it could have happened.
