Re: Tracing legacy of a Black Civil War soldier
In Response To: Tracing legacy of a Black Civil War soldier
() Cool VKN! I really enjoyed the article. It added context to one of my ancestors. My 2nd great grandfather also served in the 43rd USCT. I have copies of his pension papers, his veterans home records and his picture, as well as his original original will and obituary from 1913 and his original discharge papers which he framed with his wedding certificate of April 2, 1863. He was quite a character from all that I've read and heard. Thanks to all the detail in Mr. Scott's article I have a better understanding of what happened to the 43rd USCT. Mr. Dawson might want to visit DC some day to go to the Memorial to the USCT Soliders were he will see his grandfather's name; then he can go to the museum down the street. I took my kids there on Memorial day to lay flowers for their ancestor. Actually, the next time I'm in DC, I can take a picture of the memorial and the name and forward it to Mr. Dawson. Thanks for posting the article Lee
