My Great, Great, Grandmother,Grace Smith AKA Grace Gates lived and died in Surry County, N.C. She was about 125 years old or older when she died in 1915.
She had three sons in the 1870 census, Jacob 20, Jack 19 and James 14. In the 1910 census she stated she had had 9 children and 3 were living. Her parents were born in Alabama and she was born in Alabama.

Her brother Jerry Hayes was living in the house with her in census of 1880. Jerry had been the slave of Jesse Hayes of Wilkes County, N.C.; and Grace had been the slave of David Yates and Nancy Hayes Yates in Wilkes Co.,N.C. before she was given to Sarah and Eng Bunker.
