Griffe

The reason you never saw it in the census is because those people in Washington, DC could not be bothered with the minute differences that Louisiana had in place. I have not found again the long list that Louisiana had, but a "Griffe" is a person considered 3/4 Black, the child of a Mulatto person and a Black person.

I saw one list that had names that indicated whether the Black parent was male or female.... Sheesh!
