I have seen the word Griffe, but never remember what it means because I never saw it in a census..
Census usually just shows Black, Negro, white, Mulatto, Indian and once in awhile Chinese.. Sometimes in census you see a Black father and Mulatto wife and Mulatto children, etc..
There have been people who find Mulatto in census on their ancestor, but who don't want it to mean their ancestors were Black, so they argue it means Indian and white..I have seen that a LOT..But when you go further back on the same name, you find no Indian, but only Black and white, or more Mulatto..
Silly silly people..Wonder why they bother with genealogy if they don't really want to know who their ancestors were..
