I have Win(g)fields who married into my Mason family from Sussex County. You might have to check with Selma Stewart who has transposed the List of free negroes from Sussex County to see if they are listed and if there is a connection. Several of the families that were known to have a connection to Dinwiddie County you will also find in Sussex. If I'm not mistaken, there was something posted on the forum regarding free people of color living in Petersburg.
