I have three old issues (I got on line) of the Virginia Genealogical Society's Newsletter the first of which has a wonderful article about the VA Free Negro Registers and is followed by an "Annotated List of Registers and List of Free Negroes" - a list of extant registers in 1995. The listing continues in subsequent issues and they all give detailed sources. The issues are: Volume 11, not. 2, Mar-Apr 1995, Volume 29, No. 6 Dec 2003 and Volune 30, No. 1 Feb 2004.

Great article and detailed sources for many counties - although given the age of the publication it may be dated information - especially the Library of VA.
