Georgia law from 1818 to 1865 required that each free person of color (African-American,Native-American, etc.) have a white guardian and be annually registered
in their county of residence. Some counties, such as Henry, did not keep
separate registers of free persons of color but recorded registrations in the-county inferior court minutes. These registrations were also published annually in the newspapers, by the first Monday in May.
A series of responses will follow to indicate dates for each Georgia county. These records may be found in the Department of Archives and History.
