My mother-in-law's paternal family hails from Jackson, Madison County, TN. Madison County has a very impressive genweb site. They are among the many unsung heroes of genealogy. On their website there is an area with abstracts from Freedman Labor Contracts. Among the labor contract links is an interesting abstract about this interracial marriage. I find it interesting because it seems me, from reading the law, that the fee for an interracial marriage was $500 in 1831. That would have been a very large sum of money just to be married, so I can't imagine that many would have paid it. I find this article interesting because I have been researching some families from Campbell County, TN, that were interracial couples. I did not find marriage records for these couples but Campbell County apparently does not have any marriage records before about 1838. And these families were married before the county marriage records began. I was unaware of this law in Tennessee and I wonder how closely it was adherred to.
