FPOC Guardianship Records in SC

I am at a brick wall. My ancestor, Richard P. Harleston, born 11/20/1822, appears in the records as a FPOC living in Charleston on his own as early as 1838. He is reasonably well documented after that. What I am trying to find is his Guardianship record. I am told that most, if not all FPOC's (especially males)had to have a white guardian, and that the guardian filed papers stating the FPOC's good character. I have tried to locate guardianship records only to find that the file which would include this name (Richard P. Harleston) is missing. I am hoping that if such a record is located that it will show the guardian for this ancestor was his former owner and I believe, very likely his biological father, William Harleston (born about 1800, died 1874). Has anyone researched these Guardianship records or can shed some light on where I should go from here?
