Don't take an odd discrepency as necessarily a problem. Remember, you are dealing with a French/creole speaking person in all likelihood. The Civil War claims (or reparation claims) were often handled by those who required interpreters. I have an ancestor whose reparation claim was denied because he was a "French citizen" despite the fact that his ancestors had been in Louisiana for generations. Even outside of this context screw-ups happen. If memory serves, Hebert's report of the marriage of Valerien Ozenne refers to the wife as the daughter of Marie Jeanne. I've seen the original record. It says granddaughter. You are correct, if the relationships are as reported, the correct label is uncle.
