I am so happy you found this posting. I wonder are we in some way distantly related. I cannot imagine that there were a lot of free black Reeds in Westmoreland Virginia.However in saying that,I have a feeling that Reed is my ancestors married name? Thus, I do not know my gggg grandfather's name. Through out the census, the Reed family is always mother and children. I am not sure if maybe a husband died years before her in maybe 1830's. When did Carter set his slaves free, and can you tell me how Reed as a surname is connected to the man.
