"Augustus," White House servant, ca. 1836
The White House Historical Association is seeking information on a servant of President Andrew Jackson. We have only his first name, Augustus, and we believe he was a free person of color because he is described as mulatto and as a "hired domestic" rather than a slave. We believe that during a riot in Washington, possibly the Snow Riot of 1835, he was being sought by the angry mob for some reason. He apparently worked in Andrew Jackson's office, and we are assuming that he was at least in his 20s at the time of the riot, which would put his estimated birth date as prior to 1816.
If anyone has any information on this man, we would appreciate receiving a reply. I hope that this post is appropriate to the forum, and thank you very much for any leads you may have.
