Whetsel/Whitsel Family: VA - OH
I'm researching the Whetsel/Whitsel/Whetzel/Wetsel/Wetzel family of Rockingham Co,VA/Seneca Co., OH.
The oldest relative that I have been able to identify is Daniel Whetsel, b. 1780 in VA.
He appears on the 1820 U.S. Census in Seal Township, Pike Co., OH.
By the mid-1820s, he had migrated with his family to Seneca Co, OH, where he appears on the US Census from 1830.
His first wife was Jane Townsend. His second wife was Henrietta from Rhode Island.
I know that he had at least 2 sons, Eli (b. 1814 in VA) and Phelix/Felix (b.1811 in VA).
I believe that he also had a son named Silas and a daughter named Nancy (b. 1827) who married Lewis Fountain/Fontaine.
Phelix was my great-great-great-great grandfather; he died in Seneca County, OH, in 1874. His wife was Lavina Newsom, daughter of Henry Newsom and Dorothy Byrd of Logan Co., OH.
This family is referred to in the census records as free persons of color. The oral history in my family says that this family was of German and Native American origin. Because they do not appear in any of the Whetsel family histories that I have read so far, I am wondering if perhaps this family's members were slaves of one of the Whetsel families in Rockingham Co, VA., or perhaps somehow related.
Any information that anyone might be able to provide on this family would be very much appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
