Re: Inquiry on the Color Line
In Response To: Re: Inquiry on the Color Line ()
Hi Carole, The author is really focused on other places (Memphis, LA, Kentucky, Mississippi etc) and only makes 3 references to Arkansas in the whole book, and I typed out one of the longest passages. So I am not sure how knowledgeable he is about the whole situation in Arkansas, or if he did know more, figured it was not as important as the other places cited. He does mention in an endnote that: "Arkansas legislators allowed non resident free black steamboat workers to circulate through their cities and towns provided they did not stay for more than 3 months", and also says "See...an Act to Prohibit the Emigration and Settlement of Free Negroes or Free Persons of Color into this State" Arkanasa Act 1843. It really is an interesting read and shows another facet of life in the south that is sometimes overlooked. Selma
