Thanks for sharing your relationship to some of the people portrayed in the book. I've ordered the updated version and look forward to reading Ms. Winch's research.

As you said - we can't judge those who "pass into white". Interestingly some folks now are coming back - or thanks to the work of genealogists, are now aware that categories of "black" and "white" in America are quite simplistic - as is the entire racial paradigm; as more family histories are unearthed the complexity increases.
