Does anyone have any free black Carters from Virginia in their genealogical lines? In 1860 my ancestor Phebe Carter is a free black woman with six mulatto children in Spotsylvania, Virginia. This was new to me, I did not know that my mothers' Carters were free blacks. Does anyone also have any VA Carters? And any suggestions on how I might find other records? Where might I go or what can I read to find info on free blacks in VA? I'm going to have to make a trip to the courthouse sometime soon. I'm open for any suggestions on how to research this as well as any Carter information. Thank you, T. M. Garnett
