I would say that some of these families in his book/website were the descendents of Native Americans because a lot of times people who were native/black were considered mulatto, free people of color, or even negro in the records depending on the recorder. Every person defined as a mulatto wasny necessary of african ancestry.I've researched a Louisiana family who was of mostly Native American ancestry with some europeon and african blood. In the census they were listed as being mulatto even though culturally and genetically most of their ancestry was native america. These people are the chimacha and houma indians of Louisiana. Then other times many families opted to be black instead of saying that they were native amrican. Lena Hornes ggrandfather was half native american and british. He decided to become "colored" and married a black woman in the process. You have to be careful of these racial labels because it all depends on who gave them the labels.
