Ransom Pettiford Freedom Hearing

This is a transcript of the hearing for Ransome Pettiford to verify his status as a free person of color. Ransom Pettiford is the son of my great great great grandfather Edmund Pettiford. Edmund and his family migrated to the midwest in the 1840s.

Appearing in Court for a Record of His Freedom
State of North Carolina, Guilford County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions
November Term 1841.
Whereas RANSOM PETTIFORD a young man of color by his Council prayed the Court to have a Record made as to his freedom and thereupon RICHARD MENDENHALL and JESSE WHEELER personally appeared in Open Court and made the following affidavit to wit:
RICHARD MENDENHALL maketh affirmation in Open court that he has been acquainted with RANSON PETTIFORD a young man of color for about six years and that he is about 28 years of age and about five feet eight or nine inches high and of a yellow complexion and is understood and believed to be the son of EDWARD(Edmund) and SALLY PETTIFORD who removed into said MENDENHALL's neighborhood six or seven years ago with their family and have certificates with them certifying that they are free born and further saith that EDWARD PETTIFORD and his family have been living near him for five or six years past and that RANSOM PETTIFORD has been in his employee at different times and they have been acknowledged as free people of color and that they have enjoyed all rights and privileges as such. JESSE WHEELER maketh Oath and saith that he has been acquainted with RANSOM PETTIFORD for at least six or seven years that he is a young man of color and about five feet eight or nine inches high of a yellow complexion well formed strong and active. That he has been a number of years a citizen of this County and at all times has passed and been received and acknowledged as a free person ot color. And this affiant further states that he, is acquainted with EDWARD PETTIFORD and SALLY PETTI FORD the parents of the said RANSOME PETTIFORD and that they are citizens of this County and they have been received and admitted at all times among the free citizens as free persons of color and entitled to and enjoying all the rights and privileges and immunities of free persons of color according to the Law of North Carolina. Tbe foregoing affidavits as to the freedom of RANSON PETTIFORD being made presented and read in Open Court on motion it is ordered by the Court that the same be sp-_ upon the Records and that the Clerk of the Court certify that the said affidavits and the proceedings in this case under his hand and seal of this Court and that the same be delivered to said RANSOME PETTIFORD as evidence of his freedom.
